DESCRIPTION:
Are you confident in your spinning skills that you would like to now spin for a specific project in mind? Perhaps you have the perfect fiber for a project but you’re just not sure how much of it you will need to spin to create a sweater’s quantity of yarn. In this workshop Alanna will walk you through the steps needed to figure out just how much fiber you will need to spin for a commercial pattern.
Topics covered will include:
Swatching
Matching a commercial pattern’s yarn’s specifications
How to modify your spinning to be best suited for the project of your choosing.
TECHNIQUES COVERED:
Making a control card and learning how to use it
Controlling grist
Using a swatch and pattern to predict yardage and fiber needed
PREREQUISITE SKILLS NEEDED:
Participant should be able to spin a continuous yarn and have basic plying knowledge/experience (plying a yarn from 2 bobbins)
MATERIALS NEEDED:
This workshop will be more of a lecture format, however, if you wish to participate while watching in optional spinning exercises you will need:
Index card or other heavy weight cardstock paper for creating a control card
Ruler or measuring tape
Commercial pattern you wish to spin for
1-2 yards of the commercial yarn called for in above pattern or equivalent (optional but helpful)
digital scale (ability to weigh in grams)
safety pin
Google account (to be able to open, save and view template for calculations)
1/2 oz of fiber that you wish to use for the commercial pattern
If you wish to work along with me during the workshop, you will want to spun up the 1/2 oz of fiber and create a 20 stitch x 40 row knitted swatch (for crochet you can make a similar size swatch and for weaving you can use a weavette/pin loom). Make sure the yarn you’re using is washed/finished as it will be used for your project
If you don’t have enough time to spin before the workshop you can use handspun you already have on hand and knit it into a 4” swatch recording number of stitches and rows.
