This workshop will break down all the elements of a consistently spun yarn that includes drafting styles, fiber preparation, and understanding twist. You will leave more confident in spinning any type of weight of yarn more evenly and consistently as well as how to maintain consistency when spinning over several sessions for a project's worth of yarn.

Techniques covered:

  • Drafting methods for consistency

  • Analyzing yarn qualities like twist angle, twists per inch and wraps per inch for consistency

  • Making a control card and learning how to use it

Prerequisite skills needed:

Participant should be able to spin a continuous yarn and have basic plying knowledge/experience (plying a yarn from 2 bobbins)

Materials needed:

To participate in optional spinning exercises you will need:

  • 1 yard black and. 1 yard white commercially spun and plied yarns (thicker yarns will work better but bulky isn’t necessary). If these colors aren’t available you can choose two high contrast colors.
