Do you love the look of a gradient yarn but you’re not sure how to achieve it with your handspun?
Or are you curious to learn different approaches that you can use for unlimited gradient yarn color possibilities and combinations?
Wouldn’t it be great to know exactly how your gradient yarns will look in a finished project even before you begin spinning them?
In this yarn spinning workshop, Alanna will cover the basics of color theory, how it applies to fibers, and give you detailed instructions on how to create a gradient in your handspun yarns. The workshop is structured as a lecture/demonstration with optional spinning and fiber preparation exercises to try to improve your gradient yarn spinning skills.
This course was conducted as a LIVE online workshop. The footage was recorded, edited, and is now available for instant and unlimited access.
Format: Lecture, demonstration, & hands on exercises
Level: Participants can be at any skill level since the focus is on how to work with color
Equipment: Drop spindles, spinning wheels and electric spinners are all welcome. Hand carders or a drum carder will be part of the exercises but isn’t necessary to purchase prior to taking the workshop.
Duration: 2 hr 20 min

Workshop Goals:
When you’ve completed this workshop you will be:
Comfortable selecting colors for spinning a gradient yarn
Able to create any type of color gradient yarn
Able to visualize color gradient and project pairings before starting
Workshop Topics:
What is a gradient yarn?
Color theory and types of gradients
What projects work best with gradients?
Why would you want this effect?
How to spin a gradient yarn
How to pair handspun gradient yarns with projects
Add on extension: Planning For a Gradient tutorial
Learn how to envision how your gradient will look like in your desired project before you even start spinning for it. This add on tutorial will break down step-by-step how to utilize a photo of your desired project and the gradient you wish to use to see how they will work together.
Materials:
Fiber to spin (I used a Polwarth/Silk top from Desert Panda Fiber Arts in the colorway "Orange Grove")
If you have fiber you would like to use, either a braid of fiber (roving or top) that has
A minimum of 3 colors but ideally no more than 5
Color bands longer than a staple length (if possible)
Light medium and dark values (if possible)
½ oz black fiber
½ oz white fiber
Hand carders or drum carder
Spinning tool (drop spindles, electric spinners, and treadle wheels are all welcome)
Optional (kitchen scale or something to weigh the fiber)
