DESCRIPTION:
Twist plays a fundamental role in yarn construction but it also influences other aspects of the yarn such as the hand of the final fabric, durability, wearability, and drape. If you’re interested in learning how to control the amount of twist in your yarns, and how your twist choices influence project outcomes this course will cover those topics and more. You will finish knowing:
How twist influences the hand of your handspun fabric,
How much twist is desirable for a given diameter of yarn,
How much twist is desirable for different fibers (mohair, cotton, wool, and silk),
How assessing the angle of twist can improve your spinning.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS NEEDED:
You should be able to spin a continuous yarn and have basic plying knowledge/experience (plying a yarn from 2 bobbins).
MATERIALS NEEDED:
This course contains spinning exercises for you to try to improve your understanding of twist and grist. The exercises are optional, but to complete them, you will need the following:
Yarn making tool (working spinning wheel, drop spindle, or electric spinner)
Spinning wheel oil (if using a wheel or e-spinner to ensure equipment is in good working order)
1 empty bobbin with leader
Commercially spun yarn that you would like your handspun to be similar to (~1 yard)
Ability to print a handout prior to the beginning of the workshop
Index card
Commercially-prepared combed BFL top humbug (1oz) or similar fiber prep and coloring as pictured here.
*Optional* Magnifying glass for observing yarn properties
*Optional* One length of 2 separate yarns, one dark and another light-colored yarn (high contrast like black and white or complimentary colors like red and green will work, about 3 feet long OR two high contrast strips of combed top)
